First Lesson
The Video Lessons Project

The first video lesson is here! Watch and practice at the comfort of your home, by yourself or with a friend.
It starts with 2:30 minutes of me doing dance improvisation; I believe it is important to see your teacher's dance style before learning from her. Following that, there are about seven minutes of belly dance lesson. We learn how to do the twist, how to walk with it, and more.
At the bottom of this page you can write comments regarding this lesson. Last, before you begin please remember that learning to belly dance over the internet does not constitute an alternative for taking classes with a teacher. Now go have fun!

The music I dance to is the song "Ra'etak" ("I protected you") from Hussein el Masry's album "Arabian Emotions". I love this album and Hussein el Masry's music, and I think it is a good choice for becoming familiar with contemporary Arabic music.
Hussein el Masry was born in Cairo, Egypt, in 1952 and is a virtuoso oud player, composer and singer. He studied at the Institute of Arab Music in Cairo. In 1977 he moved to Paris, and he lives there since.
Visit Hussein El Masry's website to read more about him and to listen to his CD's.
A hip scarf like the one I wear here can be bought in the boutique.

A video recommendation – I invite you to watch this video of Suheir Zaki.

She is elegant and graceful, and was one of Egypt's legendary belly dancers. Loved and appreciated all around the Arab world, she was very popular during the sixties and the seventies of the last century. Anwar Sadat even called her "the Oum Kolthoum of dance".
If you like her style, watch more videos of her. Go to the video gallery, enter the category "belly dance classic stars" and there you will find a sub category dedicated to Suheir Zaki.
